Lilla My

dsc_1782This headband is named as such after my sister, who requested it special, as she loves to wear her hair as the character Lilla My (Little My, prounced as the greek letter, not the pronoun) in the books about the Moomin family. Lilla My is an awesome little girl, angry, brash, headstrong and very loyal. She was always my favourite in the books.

The headband is supposed to be worn with your hair up, thus the widest point is actually at the neck, and the thinnest in the front.

Size
20 inches. Stretches to fit a 22 inch head with lots of hair. Try bigger needles or additional rows at the end of the pattern repeat if you are bigger than that. And the reverse if you have less hair or head than me.

Material
- Polar by Järbo Garn (100% wool, 50 grams, 60 metres/65 yards), 1 skein black (381).
- needles, 5.5mm/US#9.

Gauge
No clue. None. It’s um, roughly worsted weight yarn if that helps.

Directions
Cast on 21 sts with provinsial cast on. Work the four set up rows. Then work the pattern repeat until your work measures 21 cm (8.25 inches). Then move on to the decrease of the chart, we are now decreasing for the front (and yes, it will look strange as you start increasing again, but it’s sneakily covered up later). Follow up with the increase rows, and then work the pattern repeat until you have 50 cm (almost 20 inches) of headband. Bind off using a three-needle bind off or, if you’re up for the challenge, Kitchener Stitch. (Hint: if you have done the Rogue Hoodie this is a piece of very scrumptious cake.)

To get the French knot look that was requested I after this picked up 11 sts (one at the thinnest point and five on each side of it) on the back, and knit garter stitch until the strip wraps all the way around, roughly 30 rows. Bind off and sew this to the thinnest point of the headband and you’re done.
